What is CrossFit?

CrossFit reflects the core movements of life.

CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. As a program, it’s been designed to enhance an individual’s competency at all physical tasks whilst improving health and fitness. It’s also universally scalable across load and intensity, making it the perfect fitness regimen for any committed individual regardless of experience or age. When these factors are combined with CrossFit’s data-driven methodology and ability to harness team spirit, the physical, mental and social fitness results achieved are hard to beat.

CrossFit is constantly varied, high-intensity functional movements

Crossfit workouts consist of large, functional and multi-joint movements that reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and more. CrossFit draws on these core movements of life or universal motor recruitment patterns, performed in a wave of contraction from core to extremity, to allow you to maximise your body’s efficiency.

In other words, CrossFit improves your functional movement capabilities allowing you to move the largest loads, over the longest distance, in the shortest time. The more work you do in the least amount of time, or the higher the power output, the more intense the effort. By employing a constantly varied approach to training, functional movements and intensity, CrossFit leads to dramatic gains in fitness.

Some of the functional movements included in CrossFit workouts include:

  • Weight training: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, Clean & Jerks, and snatch.
  • Gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climbs, push-ups, sit-ups, handstands, and jumping.
  • Athletics: Bike, run, row, skip, etc.

CrossFit enhances your competency at all physical tasks

CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program designed to improve fitness and health. Developed over several decades, CrossFit’s isn’t a specialised type of fitness but a program that aims to optimise physical competence across 10 key physical skills.

  • Cardiovascular/respiratory endurance – The ability of body systems to gather, process and deliver oxygen.
  • Stamina – The ability of body systems to process, deliver, store, and utilise energy.
  • Strength – The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply force.
  • Flexibility – The ability to maximise the range of motion at a given joint.
  • Power – The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply maximum force in minimum time.
  • Speed – The ability to minimise the time cycle of a repeated movement.
  • Co-ordination – The ability to combine several distinct movement patterns into a singular distinct movement.
  • Agility – The ability to minimise transition time from one movement pattern to another.
  • Balance – The ability to control the placement of the body’s centre of gravity in relation to its support base.
  • Accuracy – The ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity.

CrossFit can be scaled across load and intensity

While CrossFit challenges the world’s fittest, the program is designed for universal scalability, making it the perfect application for any committed individual, regardless of experience. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change the program. The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree, not kind.

CrossFit is driven by data

The aim of CrossFit is to forge a broad, general and inclusive fitness supported by measurable, observable and repeatable results. By keeping accurate scores and records, running a clock, and precisely defining the rules and standards for performance, CrossFit coaches and individuals can track the metrics at every workout. This data not only provides motivation but also provides a safe, effective and efficient environment where performance can be measured in a meaningful way; increased work capacity across broad time and modalities.

Crossfit harnesses the camaraderie, competition and fun of sport

One of the key reasons why CrossFit is so effective is the community that spontaneously arises when people do CrossFit workouts together. This team spirit has given birth to a global network of CrossFit affiliates that number over 13,000. When this natural camaraderie, competition and fun of sport is harnessed, the intensity achieved is hard to beat.
